Attorney's activities

Early on it was clear to David Winer that criminal law was his passion. While studying for his undergraduate degree in Criminology at the University of Iowa, David interned with the Coralville Police Department and  rode along daily with patrol officers and saw first-hand the criminal justice system.

In 1988, immediately upon graduation from law school David was hired by the Lake County Public Defender’s Office where he was involved in every aspect of the criminal system. In a very brief period of time, he was recognized and quickly built a reputation for aggressive and successful litigation in every type of felony, misdemeanor and DUI/Traffic cases.  Following his experience at the Lake County Public Defender’s Office, in 1992 David was hired as a legal consultant in the development of South Africa’s Public Defender’s Office and  also worked for the Legal Resource Centre a human rights law office, and provided guest lectures on Comparative Criminal Law at the Law School of the University of Pretoria.

Upon returning from South Africa, David entered private practice with his father Harold, and brother Evan.  The Winer name has been a presence since 1961 where Harold Winer has been a fixture in the Lake County legal community that created the finest and most respected law firms in Lake County. David J. Winer is very in the local legal community where he was a member the Editorial Board and Contributing Author of the Lake County legal publication, The Docket, past Chairman of the Juvenile Law Committee, current member of the Criminal Law and Traffic Law committees of the Lake County and Illinois Bar Associations and the current chairman of the Lake County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service.

In the over thirty years of practice David has established a highly respected reputation and is fully aware that the majority of criminal and traffic cases do not result in a trial, but are resolved in a pre-trial negotiation. While many attorneys make a quick deal and plead their clients guilty, David looks carefully at every angle to decide what is in his client best interests, either a trial or the best possible negotiation. The respect and the relationships he has established over many years pays off for all his clients.
